Ever wonder how celebrities manage to stay in such great shape with their hectic schedules? We have the answer!
We sat down with Holly Madison, former Playboy model and headliner for PEEPSHOW at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas and expectant mom; actor Sean Patrick Flanery, who played the lead role in “Powder;” Ashlan Gorse, correspondent and fill-in anchor for E! Entertainment Television; and Vik Sahay, best known as Lester Patel on the NBC series “Chuck” and, more recently, “American Reunion,” share their secrets with us.
What are absolute “must dos” when trying to get and stay in shape?
Holly Madison: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables! Not only are they the best things
for you, but I find the more I eat them, the less I crave fast food and sweets. Stay active; if you don’t have time to do a heavy workout everyday, walking, taking the stairs and keeping a few exercise videos and a yoga mat at home will help make keeping fit a natural part of your day. And, don’t forget to drink lots of water.
Sean Patrick Flanery: The reason people usually fail at getting into shape is never the lack of a good workout or the proper equipment. It’s simply a lack of commitment. When you truly “want” it, it comes relatively easily. A real want will provide the discipline to achieve results.
Ashlan Gorse: Understand that fitness is a lifestyle change, not just an easy fix. If
you think you are going to do it for a week and go back to your old habits, you will fail.
Vik Sahay: Change up your routine constantly, so you don’t get bored with the exercises. I circulate from boxing to running to circuit training to hiking to tennis.
What’s your favorite workout?
Holly Madison: My favorite workout is yoga because stretching feels good. I also like the fact that I get better at poses over time, and it’s more my style than going hard on cardio.
Sean Patrick Flanery: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The workout is hidden inside something that occupies all of my mental faculties and precludes me from even acknowledging that my heart rate might be at 170 [beats per minute].
Vik Sahay: In addition to boxing, running, circuit training, hiking and tennis, earlier in my career, I started Indian dance.
How do you manage to stick to a fitness regimen with a busy schedule?
Holly Madison: I’m lucky – I get my cardio in with PEEPSHOW five nights a week.
Ashlan Gorse: I work it into my life. I take power walks with my dog, so we both get a workout. I only take the stairs at work, and I’m constantly moving, even when I’m sitting in front of my computer.
Do you have a favorite “go-to” recipe for a quick and easy meal or a favorite “healthy” food?
Holly Madison: My favorite healthy foods are green smoothies. A few months ago, my boyfriend and I started drinking them every morning, and I have already seen so many health benefits. I lost weight, crave junk food less and get full faster. I also started to notice my allergies subside.
Sean Patrick Flanery: A fruit and veggie smoothie in my Vitamix blender. Quick, super easy and healthy.
Ashlan Gorse: I love soft-boiled (local organic) eggs. They take five minutes to make and are full of protein.
What advice would you give readers to stay fit during the holiday season?
Holly Madison: I would say indulge in your favorite holiday foods, but only on the actual holidays. Don’t just use the “season” as an excuse to chow down on holiday treats, and definitely don’t grab a peppermint mocha, for example, every other day just because it’s that time of year.
Sean Patrick Flanery: Simple. Lose the “eat,” and “drink,” but keep the “be merry.”
Ashlan Gorse: Try to stop eating processed food. It’s full of chemicals. For example, I would rather have honey in my tea than a spoon full of fake sugar. I am
healthier and leaner since cutting processed food. Oh, and no soda. As soon as I break down and drink one, it’s bloat time.
Vik Sahay: Remember that healthy is not an on/off switch. Know all you can about what you are putting into your body. You may not feel the effects of the right foods right away, but it pays off in the long run.
