Why You Should Learn the Rules of Poker

| October 22, 2013 | Reply

Last week I was invited to a media event hosted by Poker Prima Divas and Hollywood Pop Gallery.  As myself and other writers sat around poker tables in a gorgeous space with a speak easy vibe, Ellen Leikind, author of the book “Poker Women: How to win at Love, Life, and Business Using the Principles of Poker,” explained the basic rules of poker and how to apply these rules to (you guessed it!) business, love, and everyday life. I went in reluctantly with little to no knowledge of what I understood to be a male dominated game, but left a 4th place trophy winner!

Since my mind is often on a one way track to makeup, Ellen got me thinking: What if women took those same rules, and applied them to their world of beauty?  Pull up a chair as I share a few things I learned about poker and how you can effectively translate these rules to win in beauty and in life. I think you will be amazed at the correlations!

Rule #1: Play your Best Hand.

In Poker:

The number one rule I learned in poker is that it is okay to fold. In fact, it is encouraged! Strength comes from knowing which rounds to play and which rounds to sit out. Be strategic!

In Makeup:

Play up your best features! Love your lips? Use a shiny lacquer to accentuate them. Have eyes to die for? A soft smokey eye is very wearable for daytime and can be your signature look. Work with what you got!

In Life:

Be aware of your life goals and continually make calculated moves toward them. Jumping at every opportunity is not always the best way to stay on track. Timing is everything.

Rule #2: Perfect your poker face.

In Poker:

Do the other players have a good hand? Are they bluffing? Should I go all in? Keeping your opponents guessing is the best way to maintain the upper hand.

In Makeup:

Do not allow premature lines and wrinkles to throw off your poker face! Sometimes a droopy or heavily wrinkled eye area can cause your resting expression to display an emotion that you may not be feeling or want to convey. Eye cream is key, but using a concentrate will treat even more aggressively. My recent addiction is DNA Serum (www.dnaserum.com.) The first time I used it I actually saw my eye area become smoother and a bit tighter. Who does not love immediate results?

In Life:

When it comes to serious professional decisions, I have found it is best to keep emotions off the table. Learn to be strong when you have to, without forfeiting your transparent and caring side.

Be Confident:

In Poker:

Get your game plan together and stay on course. Play to win!

In Makeup:

A bold lip screams confidence. It demands attention and commands the room. Swipe on some color when you are ready to demonstrate your determination.

In Life:

Dealing with jealousy? Do not let those feelings fester; it is a very slippery slope. A healthy relationship begins with self-assuredness. Presenting your new idea to a roomful of coworkers or managers? Speak boldly! Be confident in what you have to offer because what you have is unique!
