Saving Face – Investing in Yourself with Cosmetic Treatments (Part 1)

saving face

Most people enjoy looking their best and the confident feeling that comes along with it. There are several ways that you can go about putting your best face forward. Eating a healthy diet, exercising, putting care into your wardrobe, hair, and makeup and pursuing the activities in life that make you feel fulfilled and happy are all ways that you can feel more confident in your image. When you feel dissatisfied with your face due to aging, genetics, or environmental damage it is time to consider professional intervention with cosmetic treatments and/or plastic surgery. I view it as the same as seeing a professional like a trainer, nutritionist or stylist…an excellent plastic surgeon can give you the guidance, care and results that you need to look and feel your best and help you to maintain those results (what I call “protecting your investment”).

When it comes to the face, your eyes are usually the first thing that people notice. If the skin around your eyes is sagging or wrinkled or if you have dark hollows or puffy bags, people may perceive you as tired or even sad. If you have frown lines between the eyes, people may think you are angry or tense.

Another part of the face that tends to show your age is the area around the mouth and jawline. As we age, we loose fat and collagen and the structure of our face tends to droop and sag. This manifests in mid-face volume loss, smile lines, and jowls which can give you the appearance of being depleted and worn.

Finally the skin of your face and neck show the wear and tear of age, sun damage and environmental pollutants. This can show up as discoloration, blotches, brown spots, freckles, wrinkles, uneven texture and dull  skin. This type of skin damage can make you appear unhealthy or weathered.

Dr. Diktaban’s  Solution

The solution to the aging face is in three categories.

– Non-surgical

– Surgical

– Maintenance and Protection

Non-Surgical solutions to aging include injectables, fillers, resurfacing, lasers, peels and radiofrequency.

Injectable neuromodulators such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin target specific facial muscles that cause unwanted lines in the face such as frown lines, forehead creases and squint lines/crow’s feet. When those specific muscles are injected, it causes them to relax, therefore the injected muscles cannot contract as strongly. The results of these injections help the patient reflect a smoother wrinkle free appearance lasting typically 3-5 months.

Injectable fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Belotero, and Voluma are used to restore lost volume and plump the skin to fill in medium-to-deep lines and wrinkles. The most common areas injected are: under the eyes, mid-face (cheeks) and into those smile lines. I like using fillers on my patients because it can be customized and adjusted to each patient’s needs and wants. Depending on the type of filler used, results can be short term (3-4 months), medium term or long term (up to 2 years or longer).

I often recommend one or a combination of injectables to achieve the desired goal. The beauty of using these injectables is that you can come into the office for a quick “Liquid Facelift” and leave feeling transformed while still keeping a very natural appearance.

Restoring, rejuvenating and refreshing the texture and clarity of the skin can be achieved with treatments such as lasers, radiofrequency, resurfacing and/or peels. These treatments help remove unwanted brown spots, age spots, fine lines, acne scars and other imperfections. These can be customized to give my patients the exact level of skin rejuvenation that they desire. A favorite in my office for those types of issues is the PicoSure Laser Facial or “Pico Facial” which can be used to refine skin on your face, neck, décolleté and hands.

Surgical Solutions

Even with all of the effective non-surgical treatments for anti-aging, nothing is going to give you the type of definitive results that come with a plastic surgical procedure. Procedures such as a brow lift, eye lift (eyelid rejuvenation surgery), neck lift and face lift, when performed by a highly trained, board certified and experienced plastic surgeon can provide a beautiful, natural looking transformation that can erase years from your appearance. As a double board certified plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience I can tell you that seeing the results of this type of surgery, and the positive changes that occur for my patients after recovery, still thrills me to this day. Many plastic surgical procedures can be performed under local anesthetic however general anesthesia performed in my certified operating suite or at the hospital is used for certain procedures.

Maintenance and Protection

Achieving perfect skin does not end when you walk out of my office. I always encourage my patients to use broad spectrum sun protection for the face, neck, and any other body part exposed to the sun (hint: Don’t forget about your hands).  I personally use Elta MD products that we stock in my office. I always have a bottle in my car and in my golf bag. I suggest using sun protection year round and especially as the sun becomes stronger in the spring and summer months it is important to protect your skin, and stay hydrated. Maintaining a healthy life style by eating well, exercising and getting adequate rest is also a big factor in maintaining healthy, beautiful skin. Finally, maintenance treatments in my office a few times a year will keep you looking your best and protects the investment that you have made in yourself and your appearance. See me as often as you would get your hair colored or shop for a new season’s wardrobe…and you will always look great and feel confident.
