matt white

By Daniel G. Hall

You may heard New York City native, songwriter/musician Matt White’s latest single “Love And Affection” on ABC’s hit show, “The Bachelorette.” And if its spot on the iTunes charts is any indication, this first track and buzz single off his newly released album “Shirley” signifies just the beginning.

White has had much success writing love songs for himself as well as other big-name artists, “Shirley” delves a bit deeper at times, with more provocative lyrics and even more sophisticated arrangements. In this new chapter, White takes his major and indie label experience and combines them with his city boy smarts, dry sense of humor and the key ingredient that has been the constant throughout his career: a rough around the edges, yet undeniable, heart.

BELLA NYC sat down with Matt to get a closer look at one of our hometown’s own …
What’s your best advice for up and coming artists?
My advice would be to work with everyone you can, from country writers to classical composers … every kind of artist you can work with is very important.

What was your inspiration for the new album, “Shirley”?
I was trying to get away from the acoustic guitar, as I am really a piano player so I focused on those sounds.

What was it like to see your name on the Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart?
It was very cool and surprising.
What is the one thing you want BELLA NYC readers to know about you?
I genuinely enjoy performing, so for me it’s just the excitement of being out there. I used to get very nervous but I think that went away with experience and practice.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
At the age of 3, when I first started playing piano.

Other than music, what are you most passionate about?
My family and traveling.

What is the best advice you ever received?
Always have fun!

Favorite part on NYC?
I love Greenwich Village.
What would a perfect day in Matt White’s world look like?
Waking up in the morning on a beach and swimming and surfing for hours.

What’s your definition of beauty?
I define beauty as being able to connect with something, whether it’s a photo or piece of art – anything that can move me.
