The New Look of Neutrals

As a makeup artist that adores color, the four-letter word “nude” can sound like a death sentence, but in reality, it’s the farthest thing from it. Neutrals can be just as fun as bright colors!

So whether you are stuck in a rut with the same nude palette you’ve been wearing since 1990, or are just looking for some nude inspiration, read on…

Play Up the Drama

One of my favorite looks is dewy skin with a matte chocolate smoky eye (Think JLo.) It is a modern twist on classic black, and is extremely complementary to every eye color.

Start by lining your inner rims with an espresso brown pencil, then take a chocolate matte shadow to pack the color on the lids, gradually blending outward toward the crease. I prefer not to use a “transition color” with this look, but if you need something to make blending easier, try using translucent powder instead of shadow.

With such a dramatic eye, keeping the skin sheer and refreshingly radiant is key. Mix a hydrating primer into your current foundation to achieve this look.

Add a Touch of Shimmer

I will never get tired of seeing a gold, bronze, or champagne lid for spring! The simplest way to add some spice to your everyday neutrals is with a little shimmer. Take advantage of the spring sun, and let it bounce off of your gilded lids.

To maximize your shine, remember to keep it to one area of the face. So, if your lids are shining, ease up on the face highlighter and vice versa.

Meet the Newest Nude

There is a reason terracotta has become such a popular shade in makeup inspo seen all over social media. This warm, soft hue complements many skin tones and can be worn many different ways. Go for a monochromatic look with a multi stick that can be used for eyes lip and cheeks.

For those who prefer to use cooler tones on their complexion, reach for a dusty rose instead. It will give a similar effect to terracotta, but lean a touch more mauve.
