Known for her starring roles in films such as Flight with Denzel Washington, the ever popular television series Law & Order: SVU and on Broadway in Dreamgirls, the multi talented Tamara Tunie will perform at Feinstein’s/54 Below, 254 W. 54 St., for highly anticipated shows kicking off her national cabaret tour.
Performance will take place Nov. 11 at 9:30 p.m. and Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Feinstein’s/54 Below offers a pre-show dinner menu.
The Pittsburgh native will captivate audiences with a fresh take on the “Legends from The Burgh,” where she celebrates the music of the legendary artists that hail from Pittsburgh.
“Growing up in Pittsburgh, I had an inkling of the many musical talents who were from ‘the ‘Burgh,’ but was thrilled to learn the depth to which those waters ran,” says Tunie.
BELLA NYC recently spoke with Tunie.
BELLA NYC: What can the audience expect from your show?
The audience can expect to be entertained, edified, and leave feeling warm and wonderful!
BELLA NYC : How do you feel about performing at such an intimate venue as Feinstein’s/54 Below?
I love performing at 54 Below. Intimacy is wonderful and having the audience being able to “see your tonsils”, makes for an exciting and “what might happen next?” kind of night.
BELLA NYC: How do you prepare for this show?
I barely get time with my Musical Director, because he is a rock star and tours with the legendary Tony Bennett. I can’t compete with Mr Bennett, so I end up rehearsing by myself with a recorded piano track from an earlier rehearsal. All I really need to know is the lyrics, and on the night, I let the band and music guide me.
BELLA NYC: What type of band will be with you?
I work with a trio: piano, bass, drums. But these musicians feel like an orchestra.
BELLA NYC: What was it like acting with Denzel Washington?
Wonderful, just wonderful. He is a consummate professional
BELLA NYC: Do you have a preference, acting or singing?
Well, I act when I sing, and playing a role is like being a part of a symphony of words, and thoughts, and visuals. So it’s kind of the same. But I will say this. I often get lost in the story of a song, coz no one can say “CUT”, LOL.
BELLA NYC: Describe what it’s like working on Law and Order?
It’s been 16 years and I still love it. I love being a part of the family, I love the stories we tell, I love being an integral part of solving a crime and getting the bad guys.
BELLA NYC: What are your thoughts on New York City?
My city. From the moment I landed, it was like being welcomed by an old friend! I love NY. I am still in awe of its beauty, what it offers, the subway is reliable, and it’s ethnic diversity from the moment you walk out your door. New Yorkers are great people. There is no place better.
