With so many different diets and ideas on weight loss, many dieters often follow myths that not only don’t let them lose weight (or worse cause weight gain), but also could be damaging to their health. Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of the best-seller Get Off Your Acid, founded Alkamind with the goal of optimizing individual’s health and energy by simplifying the pursuit of an alkaline lifestyle. Dr. Daryl Gioffre longevity expert who specializes in the alkaline diet is a former sugar addict therefore he knows firsthand what it takes to overcome adversity and challenges in your health. His specialty is uncovering the root causes of inflammation and chronic illness. Dr. Gioffre uses comprehensive, yet simple steps, to make healthy changes more convenient and sustainable. Here he shares FIVE things that sabotage weight loss:
You’re a noted celebrity nutritionist and the creator of the Alkamind Cleanse. Can you tell us a little about what the Alkamind Cleanse is, and how it is beneficial for people trying to lose weight?
The Alkamind Cleanse is a total body reset. For seven days, you aren’t putting acidic foods into your body. It is unlike any other cleanse, as you are eating 3 whole-food, plant-based alkaline meals that taste so good you feel like you’re cheating! There is no counting calories, and it is not based on deprivation.
The meals are a balanced mixture of dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, sulfur-based vegetables, and healthy fats (80%), moderate proteins (15%), and little vegetable carbs (5%).
You are drinking more water, supercharged with Alkamind Daily Greens and Daily Minerals, alkaline superfoods supplements that detox and recharge your body, and help you burn fat.
This is the only cleanse where you are directly coached by the founder of the company 24/7 before, during, and after the cleanse in our Private Facebook Group. On average, people lose between 5-15 pound in 7 days.
On most cleanses and detoxes, people want to cheat and end early – on the Alkamind Cleanse, many don’t want to stop! Many of our clients continue their cleanse 2, 3 and 4 weeks, which is perfectly safe and healthy, as it is based on real whole-food, plant-based alkaline nutrition.
A lot of people are scared to eat foods that are high in fats. Are foods high in fats harmful or beneficial for a healthy diet?
The idea that fats are harmful to our health (and waistline) is one of the biggest mistruths that we’ve been led to believe!
The truth is, there’s no reason to fear the fat. We don’t get fat because of FAT, we get fat because of too much ACID. We need fat in our diet and in fact, if you want to lose weight and reduce the inflammation levels in your body, you need to EAT MORE FAT, but the right kinds.
You see, there are fats that HEAL, and fats that KILL. When you eat the healthy fats, they not only boost your metabolism, but reduce your cravings for sugar and carbohydrates. Most people are burning sugar as their primary source of fuel, and when you eat sugar, what are you going to burn? SUGAR. And then what will you crave? SUGAR! Sugar is a dirty burn, and a bad source of fuel, and it literally becomes viscous cycle. Without sugar to burn, your body moves to fat, and will begin to melt the fat off your body.
Here are my favorites:
Avocados, Raw Seeds (Hemp/Chia/Flax), Raw Nuts (almonds/macadamia/Brazil/walnuts/pecans) Healthy oils (coconut/MCT/EVOO/Black Cumin Seed oil/Avocado).
Your goal should be to have 7-10 servings of fats daily, which equates to 2-3 servings per meal (note 1 tbsp. of oil – 1 serving)
What are your thoughts on eating foods that are marked fat-free or sugar-free?
Anytime you see something that says fat free or sugar free, all they did was SWAP one dangerous ACID for another, that is just as bad (and maybe worse), such as artificial sweeteners like aspartame or sucralose.
Not only do artificial sweeteners stimulate appetite and increase your cravings for sugar and carbohydrates, they also contribute to higher rates of strokes, heart attacks and other lethal vascular events as well as metabolic syndrome. And if people think they are going to lose more weight by going diet or fat-free, they are sorely mistaken.
Artificial sweeteners trick your body. They trigger your appetite with their sweet taste, however, is never told to stop because of the empty calories unlike when consuming sugar. It becomes a vicious cycle that makes you gain weight and want to keep on eating.
There has been some health experts that argue eating six small meals a day promotes weight loss. What is your opinions on this?
There is another word for eating six small meals a day – it’s called grazing. And while it may boost metabolism which is a positive, but there are more physiological downsides that these experts are NOT taking into account (and they need to be).
It all boils down to insulin, otherwise known as your ‘fat-storing’ hormone. When you graze and eat every couple hours, your body stimulates the release of insulin to reduce the glucose levels in your blood, and insulin makes you store fat, and is also the primary driver to chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation not only makes you feel lethargic with lower energy, it also SLOWS down your metabolism, and eventually, sets you up for chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes if not corrected.
When we move away from the grazing mentality and shift to 3 meals per day, with time in-between eating meals your insulin levels drop, and without sugar to burn for energy, what does your body turn to – FAT!
When we fast in between meals, we burn up all this sugar or glucose, and then, move to FAT! When you tap into these fat-storing calories, you gain energy and lose weight rapidly. It is also a much cleaner source of fuel for the body and brain.
95% of the TOTAL calories in your body are stored as fat and is a much cleaner source of fuel and energy than sugar, which comprises only about 5% of stored calories. If sugar is so bad, why do we even have it at all? For fight or flight, or an emergency. If I am in danger, I need quick energy, and I need it fast. That is what sugar is for.
Do you think it’s more important to plan your meals better, or to exercise more to burn off those extra calories?
They are equally important and both need to be considered for a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Exercise creates motion, and motion is life which stimulates our metabolism. It stimulates our LYMPHATIC SYSTEM which helps get rid of the toxins and acids that hold onto fat.
But with that said, you can’t put C.R.A.P (Completely Refined And Processed foods) into the body. Acidic foods like sugar and grains spike insulin which stores fat and makes you tired and inflamed. There is a knock-on effect to this. You will be LESS inclined to workout and exercise.
We need to stop the calorie in – calorie out theory. A perfect example is what I talked about above regarding artificial sweeteners. While you are consuming less calories, this way of living makes you gain weight, lose energy, slow your metabolism, and actually eat more empty carbs.
So, the two contradict each other. I’ll say it again – if you want to be truly healthy, do a small amount of exercise daily (i.e. 10 minutes on the rebounder is all it takes), and eat my 80/20 rule. When you combine the two, there is a positive geometric effect that happens with you health and energy.
