Formalwear Fashion Comes Full Circle

Everyone cleans out their closets to make room for new pieces. But tossers, beware! Fashion always comes full circle. Formalwear trends from years ago – especially from the 1980s – are making a comeback!  If you’re a proud fashion hoarder, it’s time to dig through your crates and pull out some of this season’s hottest items.

Long-Sleeved Eveningwear

For years, strapless was the go-to for eveningwear. Long sleeves were considered matronly or a throwback to the “Dynasty” era! But not anymore! Long sleeves are all the rage again, largely thanks to Kate Middleton’s sensational, long-sleeved Alexander McQueen wedding gown. And no matter your size, from petite to plus, they are a great way to cover up unwanted arm jiggle. To execute this look effortlessly, stick to sleek sleeve styles. Want to kick it up a notch? Try fully beaded sleeves. Just remember, you can still look and feel sexy with everything covered! This style will truly make you the star!

Illusion Necklines

Made popular by beauty pageant contestants in the 1980s, illusion (read: sheer) necklines can now be found on short to long, simple to sexy formalwear. Stella McCartney is just one of the designers who brought this style back from the shadows, and celebrities such as J.LO and Gwen Stefani have been gracing the spotlights with sheer shoulders. This understated trend is something that can be worn during the day or at night, and works for every size. So the next time you’re shopping for a black-tie affair, look for a dress with a sheer neckline to add subtle glamour to your style.

Often referred to as an “old lady” fabric, lace is making a huge comeback because it flatters any figure. The material makes for a stylish cover-up as its intricate patterns help mask bumps and bulges! Though some designers, like Tadashi Shoji, have favored traditional takes on this trend, updated styles have strategic cut-outs and semi-sheer lace panels, like those seen on the BCBG Max Azria Spring 2013 runway. Either way: Embrace the lace!

Stay Fabulous Tip: When shopping for formalwear, remember that rouching is notalways slimming. Sometimes less is more. Look for asymmetrical waistlines and princess lines that elongate the torso.
