 Indie Beauty Brands We Love

Can’t find that perfect beauty product? Why not create it? These women did! We’re shining the light on three brazen “beautypreneurs” and the love-worthy brands they launched.

Roberta Perry, Scrubz Body Scrub, Inc.

Launched
: 2006

Beautiful idea:
“I was raising three kids and working and became really beauty-lazy. As a result, my skin was dry, itchy and peeling. Early in my 40s I finally discovered exfoliating products. However, like Goldilocks, I became picky, some being too oily, others too drying, too many chemicals, etc., so I decided to make my own. After giving out some jars to friends and family, my sister, Michelle, declared we have to sell it, and came up with the name, Scrubz. Because it was created for personal use, in my kitchen, it was a natural, handmade product. The cool thing is that it still is!”

Why she’s beaming:
“Scrubz took everything I ever loved about business and people and wrapped it around a product line I am proud of, humbled by and use on myself and my family every single day.”

BELLA Loves: Citrus Burst Natural Sugar Scrub $16, ScrubzBodyScrub.com

Paula Ortega, Blast Makeup

Launched:
2012

Beautiful idea:
“I’ve been a professional makeup artist for several years and I’ve always had clients from different backgrounds, ages and style tastes that have the same thing in common: They’ve always asked me for a flawless natural look. They’re concerned about being inexperienced using makeup and confused with certain products that are on the market. Taking in their concerns, and having a lot of fun throwing around ideas, shortly after, Blast Makeup was born. Blast Makeup focuses on the everyday natural look of a woman, without overwhelming them with products they don’t need. Looking for something a little more extravagant? Blast Makeup has you covered as well using fewer products to achieve an amazing look.”

Why she’s beaming:
“I love having control over decisions like making our products animal cruelty free. Blast Makeup is 100 percent animal friendly. Lastly, I added my own personality when creating the names of our products which was a blast too! Having a makeup brand is really fun and rewarding and I hope to keep helping women feel and look incredible for a long time!”

BELLA Loves: Blast’s Eye & Lip Primer $18, BlastMakeup.com

Tata Harper, Tata Harper Skincare

Launched
: 2010

Beautiful idea: “I wanted to create a line of skincare that offered true anti-aging results without a single drop of synthetic chemicals. I believe that modern women deserve 100 percent natural and nontoxic products that don’t compromise on luxurious smell, feel and experience or on amazing results. My inspiration for the line was to create what I couldn’t find in the market: A truly effective complete line that didn’t compromise my health with synthetic chemicals, but that still contained powerful new natural skincare technology.”

Why she’s beaming: “I love that every woman that tries my skincare line is one less woman exposed to chemicals in her everyday routine, and that the word on safe, natural beauty is spreading. It’s an inspiring movement to be a part of!”

Fall Trends: Healthy Hair That Wows

By Kyle White, Celebrity Colorist at Oscar Blandi

In the same way we switch out our summer clothing for the fashions of fall, we should always adjust our hair color with the change of season. I like to think of hair color as someone’s most important accessory because, unlike a great bag or pair of Jimmy Choo’s, hair color is the one accessory you never take off. Here are some of my tips to consider when prepping color for fall.

Adjust Your Color

Refresh hair color for fall by going slightly darker and warmer. As the sun begins moving further away from the earth and casts a bluer light, golden tones bring warmth back to the skin, especially as we tend to get paler. Deepening color slightly will ensure much-needed contrast between skin and hair. If you get your color done at the salon, ask your colorist to use a gold gloss for added depth and warmth. At-home glosses work well too – try Rita Hazan Foaming color gloss to enhance gold tones.

Don’t Neglect Hair Health

When hair isn’t healthy it can look dull and lifeless. Add indoor heat and cold temperatures and everything seems to get even drier. Instantly restore radiance to lifeless hair by sleeping with a humidifier. It’s a great way to boost hair’s moisture without weighing it down like some serums and heavy conditioners can.

Treating dry skin and scalp in the cooler months can also strip hair of its vibrancy. Instead of using harsh medicated shampoos all over, try rubbing Vitamin E on the scalp before bed and shampooing in the morning to keep hair shiny and healthy. Simply pierce one or two Vitamin E capsules and squeeze out the oil, then massage into the scalp and hair. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant and is also reported to increase hair growth. Also remember to just treat the scalp or affected area, there’s no need to lather up your hair and risk ruining your color. Instead first coat hair strands with a heavy conditioner, then rub shampoo only on the affected areas of the scalp. Finish by rinsing and continuing with your normal shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. You’ll see an immediate difference in both hair health and long-lasting color.

Turn Winter Hair Woes into “Wows”

If your sun-kissed highlights have begun to look more solid and all-over blonde from sun exposure, try adding lowlight for a fall pick-me-up that adds dimension back to the hair. Ask your colorist to weave a contrasting color back into the washed-out ends of hair. The waves of lightness and darkness trick the eye into seeing depth, creating the illusion of fullness. Breaking up the solidness of color will also add a flattering contrast between skin and hair.

In the winter, we tend to see a lot of hair breakage at the nape of the neck from high collars and heavy scarves. Gravitate toward softer fabrics like silk and cashmere that allow hair to slide along the fabric instead of rubbing and breaking. And skip daily shampooing – instead use a dry shampoo. No matter how gentle the cleanser, every washing removes color molecules that keep it vibrant. The scalp’s natural oils are Mother Nature’s deep conditioner. Refresh your style with a dry shampoo like Garnier Volume Extend Instant Bodifier Dry Shampoo.

It’s essential to deep-condition at least once a week in the fall/winter months. I’m a huge fan of essential oils and one of the main reasons is because each type of oil offers its own unique benefits. Olive oil has natural UV-blocking properties and rose oil is great for removing dead skin cells and unclogging hair follicles. It’s a great way to customize your treatment while conditioning the hair. You can add these to your usual hair masque to boost its potency or just use them on their own. My personal favorite is coconut oil because it penetrates two levels of the hair shaft making it long-lasting and very effective. Plus, I just love the smell of coconuts. Simply heat a tablespoon in the microwave, apply it to damp hair and leave on for at least 15 minutes, then shampoo out.
