If you’ve never travelled on your own but are considering it, it’s important to do a little research before you leave. Solo travelling can truly be a life-changing experience. You may well feel more free that you have ever done in your life before. Working to your own agenda and following an itinerary that you’ve always dreamed off can make you feel super independent. Of course, at first, you’re going to feel scared. You can’t travel halfway around the world and not worry about certain logistical things. You have to face the fact that you might feel alone at times. Or you might not like where you’re staying. The best thing you can do is just to trust in your decisions and keep pushing through. It will be hard, and it will be challenging, but it will also be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Don’t let fear stop you from doing something that you’ve always dreamed of. Bite the bullet and get travelling! Here are some tips to get you started when you first start to travel. It’s important that you stay calm and stay organised.
- Stay alert
This is, of course, a massive consideration when you are travelling alone. There are things that you can do to help yourself tough. Try not to look obviously like a tourist. Avoid wearing tacky souvenir T-shirts and don’t walk around with a map. If you ask someone for directions, lie and say that you are meeting someone there. As a solo traveller, it’s also really important that you trust your instincts. If your gut is telling you not to do it, then just don’t do it. It could be nothing at all but it is much better to be safe than sorry.
- Explore your options
There are so many ways to get from town to town, city to city and even country to country! Don’t just rely on methods that you would use back home. Of course, it’s nice to hire a car, but driving in a foreign country can actually be really difficult! A nice idea is to take a bus. With a bus, you are able to look out of the window and almost sightsee while you travel! Bus travel can also be super economical. Trains are also very good to explore.
- Dine alone
It’s a good idea before you leave to get yourself accustomed to being alone. You’re probably going to meet many new friends on your journey, but for a large percentage, you will be on your own. And that’s a great thing! It just might take a bit of getting used to. Don’t be scared to sit down and enjoy a lovely meal when you are on your own. Talk to the bar staff or waiters and take a book with you. There is nothing unusual about this at all and it can be a really enjoyable experience!
