Current Obsession: The VNYL

Looking to put a new spin on NYC noshing? The VNYL in the East Village–the 70s-inspired multi-level restaurant and bar space from the team behind The Late Late recently introduced entirely new food and drink menus. I had a chance to sample some of the offerings with a few friends and all I can say is WOW! It’s a hip space with a chic but laid back vibe and the food is not only creative and fun—it’s fabulous! (Seriously the best Brussel Sprouts and Sliders EVER!)

Here are the details: Tied to the recent additions of celebrated local barman Darnell Holguin and chef Jamie Allen, The VNYL’s new menus marry modern New York City living with whimsical nostalgia–think a new twist on the Long Island iced tea served in a red solo cup, boozy cold brew with whiskey and banana liqueur in a bodega coffee cup, and Jamaican jerk pork sliders that pack a punch with ghost peppers and pickled jalapeño slaw.

Highlights from the Bar ($15)

• It’s L.I.T. – like a Long Island iced tea, but swap out triple sec and simple syrup for aloe liqueur and ginger, served in a plastic red Solo cup
• Cup o’ Joe – cold brew, Dewers 12, Caffè Amaro, and Giffard Banane du Brésil, served in a bodega coffee cup
• The G.T.C. – Tullamore Dew whiskey, rosemary-lemon cordial, and grapefruit-infused crème de pêche, served in a teapot
• It Was All a Dream – Holguin’s signature morir soñando-inspired cocktail with Bacardi, allspice dram, passion fruit condensed milk, and Amaro Averna, served in a paper bag-wrapped solo cup

Highlights from the Kitchen (meant to be shared)

• Naan Flatbreads
o Comte, blistered cherry tomatoes, arugula, and truffle oil ($14)
o Plancha-grilled lamb shoulder, charred cherry tomatoes, tzatziki, dill, and shaved dried Thai chili ($16)
