Cellulite: It is one word that every woman understands. That dimpled, “cottage cheese” appearance of the skin that alters clothing and swimwear choices more than almost any othermedical condition. It can occur in a variety of locations, including the abdomen, arms and breasts; however, the most prevalent location is the thighsand buttocks. Cellulite affects approximately 85 percent of women.
Although most people believe this is a “fat” problem, both diet and exercise have little to no effect on it. Aging, hormones, genetics and dramatic weight changes can all play a role in the development and appearance of cellulite. There are three structural problems that trigger the appearance of cellulite. First, the connectiv tissue bands beneath your skin surrounding fat cells can become tight and inflexible. Second, enlarged pockets of fat trapped by the rigid bands push up against the skin. Finally, thin skin makes the appearance of cellulite even worse. Although these tissue bands are normally present under the skin and attach it to the underlying muscles, it has been demonstrated that, in patients with cellulite, the bands become thicker and more numerous. There have been a variety of proposed treatments for cellulite, including creams, lotions and pills, most of which have little to no eff ect on the problem. Surface treatments such as Endermologie and VelaSmooth do off er some improvement, but only on a short-term, limited basis, as continual sessions are required to maintain the positive changes. These treatments off er no long-term improvement of the structural alterations that resulted in the skin’s dimpled appearance.
Recently the FDA approved a new type of treatment for the reduction of cellulite that has demonstrated dramatic long-term results. This treatment is knownas Cellulaze, developed by Cynosure, a leader in the medical laser industry. Cellulaze is a minimally invasive laser treatment that attacks the root causes of the dimpled and wavy appearance of the skin. The most important advance is that Cellulaze off ers signifi cant improvement in the appearance of cellulite with only one treatment. Research studies have demonstrated long-term improvement, up to two years and counting, with only one treatment. The treatment involves the introduction of a small laser fi ber under the skin.
The laser energy is then applied to the area of cellulite, resulting in:
1) A leveling out of the fat bumps
2) A releasing or cutting of the fi brous bands that pull down on the skin, improvingthe appearance of the skin dimples
3) The stimulation of collagen production that increases your skin’s depth and elasticity for a smoother look. The procedure takes approximately one hour and is performed under local anesthesia.
