Picture having a coffee and gossip date with all your besties and then sprinkle in some knowledge about your future and that’s what you get when you sit for a reading with Turkish Coffee Messenger Sema Bal. Armed with her own personal blend of Turkish coffee in hand, Bal interprets the dregs of your coffee to read your past, present and future. The art of reading coffee has been in her family for generations and she, herself, has been doing this for over 30 years.
Never ones to just take your word for it, BELLA staffers were excited to welcome Sema to our offices to see what coffee cup reading is all about. It was a comfortable, easy and friendly gathering that felt more like a gathering of girlfriends rather than a work demo and interview. So we drank some coffee (which was amazing, by the way), and while we turned our cups over to get rid of any remaining moisture, Sema did tarot card readings for us while they dried. I think it’s safe to say we were all blown away but the amount of detail Sema was able to extract from our cups and the advice she was able to give. (I even got some lotto numbers to play, so if you don’t see any more articles from me in the near future it’s because I’ve become a millionaire and moved to Fiji.)
And during all the fun chats we had, we learned quite a bit about Sema’s work. As a fan of Harry Potter (who isn’t?), I felt a little bit like I was in Professor Trelawney’s classroom and wondered if reading tea leaves was similar to coffee readings. “It’s almost the same,” Sema told us. “It’s basically just translation. There’s more in the coffee than the tea leaves so there’s more detail, but it’s almost the same.” And yes, some people are easier to read than others. It’s important to come in relaxed and not blocking yourself and always be true to who you are. If you pretend to be someone else or block yourself, you won’t get as great of a reading.
While Sema does deal with her fair share of skeptics, she doesn’t let it bother her. In fact, she understands them. “I’m not a psychic, I’m not a medium, I’m a messenger.” She simply interprets and intuits the signs she sees within the cups. She even knew I took pilot’s lessons when I was younger, something I never think about and no one except my family knows about. And we aren’t the only ones singing her praises — some of the cast of The Real Housewives of New York got quite emotional [watch] during their readings with Sema (our session wasn’t nearly as teary).
Sema’s favorite part of her job? “I get to meet people,” she told us. “It’s like having a friend over.” We agree and we can’t wait to welcome back our new friend with open arms for a future BELLA event.
