I recently created a homemade facial scrub with brown sugar, coconut oil, and vanilla extract, and another time mixed together coconut oil and mashed avocado for a homemade hair treatment. I loved the results and simplicity of both, so I asked some experts to share their favorite tips for getting healthy, fit, and looking great with natural, easy flair!

Good nutrition is the key to skin and hair that’s naturally healthy from the inside out. I reached out to Layne Lieberman, an award-winning dietitian/ nutritionist and author of “Beyond the Mediterranean Diet: European Secrets of the Super-Healthy,” to share her advice. What are some of your top nutrition picks for glowing skin and shining hair?

Skin and hair health depend on a balanced diet of protein, natural carbs, and essential fatty acids. Vitamins and minerals are essential for hair and skin cell renewal—especially vitamins C, A, D and B, zinc, and calcium. Omega 3s, polyphenols, and probiotics are also important.

Foods to Include in Your Daily Diet

Zinc: Beans, lobster, whole grains

Cell membrane-protecting omega 3s: Sardines, walnuts, flax, chia seeds

Collagen-boosting vitamin C: Strawberries, citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, leafy greens

Polyphenols and antioxidants: Blueberries, tomatoes, green tea, cocoa, red wine (in moderation), cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil

Probiotics that improve skin conditions: Kefir, yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut

Beta carotene (precursor of vitamin A): Sweet potatoes, carrots

Lieberman also reminds us to stay hydrated and avoid processed foods. Working out regularly, and meditating, stretching, bouncing and walking boost both the body and the mind.

In my quest to find a simple yet ontarget daily routine, I spoke with Pilates specialist Antonella Casagrande Petti.

Most of us never seem to find enough hours in the day! Can you share a simple fitness routine that keeps us heart healthy, stress free, and body beautiful?

I believe in keeping it simple and doable—add 30 minutes of cardio, such as running, cycling, elliptical, or fast walking, four days or more a week. I do my cardio in the morning because it boosts my energy for the day. Also important is 20 minutes or more of resistance training, such as Pilates or free weights, at least three times a week. This routine is realistic and effective. Follow with regular clean foods, lots of water, sufficient sleep, and a happy mindset.

What is your one makeup tip to enhance one’s overall look?

Skincare! To paint a beautiful portrait, you need the proper canvas. Moisturizing your facial and eye area before you start your makeup application is a must. I like to massage into areas of concern, such as laugh lines, forehead, and smile lines. The next step is to mix your foundation with moisturizer. This will give your skin both coverage and glow. If you use powder over your foundation, choose a loose powder that is talc-free. Put a little eye cream over your eye concealer—this helps it bind to the skin. And if you use eye shadow, choose a shade that is in direct contrast to your eye color as that will make your eyes really stand out. Blush should be the shade of your natural flush in the skin. You can find this easily by making a fist and matching your blush to the redness of your knuckles. For the perfect daytime pout, choose a shade brighter than your natural lip tone. For evening, experiment and try new lip tones. Set with a water mist spray.
